Effective January 24th of 2008 the Department of Natural Resources (DNREC) has banned yard waste from being disposed of at the Cherry Island Landfill. We at Econo-Haul would like to assure you that we will continue to take your yard waste as we have in the past. All we ask is that you separate your yard waste from your household trash.

Materials considered to be yard waste are gardening or landscaping debris, leaves, grass clippings, tree branches and limbs, shrubs and bushes, etc.

Econo-Haul has three plans that you can choose which one best suits you.

Plan # 1
(All customers are signed up for plan #1 automatically unless otherwise specified)We will take 8 bags of yard waste per pick up, 52 weeks a year for:

  • 1x a week service $3 dollars additional per month charge
  • 2x a week service $6 dollars additional per month charge

Plan # 2
Is for customers that will have NO yard waste at any time of the year. This means no branches, grass, leaves, plants or any other gardening product. You must call Econo-Haul at 366-7630 and inform us that you want to sign up for plan 2.
There is no charge for plan #2. With plan 2, if you decide to sign up for plan #1 at a later date, there will be a $30 dollar sign up fee.

Plan #3
Is for the customer that will only have a few bags of yard waste a year.
Each sticker costs $1 and are sold in quantities of 10 (10 stickers cost $10). You must call us at 366-7630 and order these stickers. Stickers are good for one (1) year and are non-refundable.  An initial purchase of 10 labels is required at sign up.  If you decide to sign up for plan #1 at a later date, there will be no start up fee. 

How to use stickers
Place stickers on trash bag or bundle of branches so that crew can see it and we will take on regular trash day.
 
How to dispose of your yard waste

  • Yard waste can still be placed in cans or plastic bags (bags 40 gallons or less)
  • Keep yard waste separate from household trash
  • We will take 8 bags of yard waste per pick up
  • Branches must be bundled and cut to four foot lengths
  • One bundle of branches equals one bag of yard waste
  • Yard waste will be picked up on the same day as your normal trash
     
    What Not To Do:
  • Do not put yard waste in same container as your household trash
  • Branches not bundled or are longer than four feet in length
     
    What happens if I put yard waste in with my household trash?
  • All trash must be left as per orders from (DNREC and Delaware Solid Waste Authority). If mingled trash is found when trash is dumped at the landfill, a $500 fine will be imposed to the trash company. If three violations have accrued, the trash company will be banned from Cherry Island Landfill.

    What happens if I have more than 8 bags or bundles and I signed up for plan #1?
  • You can purchase our yard waste stickers in advance and place stickers on all bags or bundles over 8. They are $10 for 10 stickers.  We will bill your account.

GUIDELINES

* Crews start work at 6:00a.m. Please have your trash out at this time to insure pick up.

BACKYARD CUSTOMERS: ALL YARD WASTE MUST STILL BE BROUGHT TO CURB.

  • Grass, leaves, tree trimmings & boxes must always be brought to the curb and put to side of normal trash in order to be taken. YARD WASTE CAN NOT BE CO-MINGLED WITH NORMAL TRASH or will be left.
  • (Please limit grass and leaf bags to a total of 8 per pick up).
  • Branches & Trimmings must be bundled & tied. They can be no longer than 4 ft. in length or they will not fit properly into our trucks. They must be done this way in order to be taken. If you have taken down a tree or shrub you will need to arrange for an estimate.

LARGE ITEMS THAT WILL BE TAKEN FROM THE CURB ON YOUR REG PICK UP DAY

One item at a time - without advance notice:

  • Furniture:      Standard sofas*, Chairs, Recliners, Tables, Mattress & Boxspring Sets, Picnic Tables
  • Appliances:   Dishwashers, Hot Water Heaters, Microwaves, Ranges, Stoves, Televisions, Washers, Dryers, &  misc. small appliances.
  • Effective 4/99- Refrigerators, Freezers, Air Conditioners & Dehumidifiers can no longer be taken. Please call our office for safe disposal instructions.
  • Misc:        Toilets, Tires (deflated & no rims), Push-Type Lawn Mowers (without gas or oil)

CHARGEABLE ITEMS - THAT MUST BE AUTHORIZED(Min. of 48 hrs.)PRIOR TO YOUR TRASH DAY:

Sofa Beds, Sofa’s with recliners Building Materials, Carpeting & Floor coverings, Cleanouts, Car Parts, Concrete, Dirt, Firewood, Mulch, Roofing Materials, Sod, Stone, Wood, etc.  (Please call 1-2 days prior to your trash day. These items will be left if you have not called ahead to authorize us to take them.)

IN ADDITION- items such as Car Batteries, Paint, Propane Tanks & Motor Oil require special handling and must be scheduled with our office prior to your pickup day.   Our office will also be able to let you know what the additional charge will be at the time of your call.   DO NOT put any of these types of items in with your trash. Paint will spray out of the truck when crushed, causing personal injury and/or property damage.  Other items may cause an explosive reaction when crushed and again may cause personal injury and/or property damage. Residents will be held responsible for any injuries and/or damage.  For alternative ways of disposing of these items you may also call the D.S.W.A’s Citizen Response Line at: (800) 404-7080.

**WE CANNOT TAKE: AMMUNITION,  ASBESTOS,  HAZARDOUS LIQUIDS, MEDICAL WASTE,  ETC.  for obvious reasons! Never put these items in with your trash!

*For Customers with Backyard Service:  Only your regular household trash can be taken from the backyard or up at your house. The 70 gallon barrels we use can hold approx. 4 large bags of trash.  Anything over that must come to the curb. Due to the time involved our men can only make one trip up to your house. Please do not overload your cans. Please bring the excess to the curb.

*Holidays: Our trucks go out on all holidays except Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day & New Years Day.  Information about make up days for once a week customers will be printed on the  back of your bills prior to these days. (Twice a week customers are only picked up once during these weeks. No credits will be given.)

**Due to the fact that the landfill is closed on most holidays, we are only able to take your regular household trash on these days. Do not put out any large items or excess amounts, as they cannot be taken. We have to make sure that we can fit everyone’s trash in for the day.

*Always have trash out by 6:00a.m. especially on holidays.

*If your trash is ever missed you must report it to our office or leave a message on our answering machine after hours. We absolutely do NOT give credits for missed pickups.  We send a truck out the next working day.  (Friday customers will be picked up on Monday.)  Please note: We do pick up during inclement weather, however, if we feel that our workers safety would be jeopardized in any way (i.e., extremely icy or other dangerous conditions)  we will not work that day and your trash will be picked up the next time we are in your neighborhood. Once again - no credits will be given - as our dump fees are the same whether we pick up on your regular day or a make up day.

*Econo-Haul does not provide containers and is not responsible for missing cans or lids. We highly recommend that you write your address inside both your lids and your cans in anticipation of windy days.  

*Econo-Haul is not responsible for items TAKEN THAT ARE WITH or NEAR YOUR trash. Do not place items near your trash such as: BIKES, mowers, charitable items, toys, etc. unless you want them to be taken.

IMPORTANT BILLING INFORMATION

New Accounts - If 1st invoice is not paid by due date, service may be cancelled immediately without any additional notice until invoice is paid in full.

Bills are sent out every two months in advance. Payments not received by the due date will be assessed a $3.00 late fee. This late fee applies to everyone, regardless of how late your payment is.  

If payment is not received within 45 days, a letter will be sent advising you that your full balance must now be received within 10 days or your service will be terminated due to nonpayment.  A $25.00 start up fee will be imposed to have service reinstated.  Accounts still unpaid after 30 days will be forwarded to our collection agency.

We now offer the option of “DIRECT DEBIT” for customers who would like payments  automatically debited from their checking accounts. Please call for forms.

Returned checks: A $25.00 fee will be issued if the bank returns your check.
